Flight

Flight is an animated film about exodus, migration and paperwork.

Culling from texts and testimonials of exodus and migration, I was intrigued by the lesser explored obstacle, i.e. the very un-exotic task of immigration and filing paperwork. I wanted to build a film around what it could mean for a person making that journey, and the uncertainty of it. As this phenomenon has and continues to impact people from across the globe, the film has been left wordless, without specific language.

Made when I was an International Animator in Residence for the Toronto Animated Image Society 2017. The film is an immersive experience, and was projected in a public gallery as part of the animation residency.

The animation is made using charcoal drawings that keep getting erased to create a new mark, but the old imprints still remain underneath. I saw this technique as mimicking the idea of leaving something behind while still being integrally tied to it.
